Client

Welsh Rugby Union Group (WRU), Principality Stadium

Scope

Trigon worked in collaboration with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) on the ongoing updates and refurbishment and review works to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

The primary use of the Principality Stadium is for sporting events, however, there are also other entertainment functions that occur within the stadium, varying the use of the pitch area whilst the stadium often holds smaller events in its ancillary areas.

As part of the refurbishment of the stadium, several new concession stands have been installed throughout the concourses of the stadium, new dedicated disabled seating has been introduced throughout with the potential for the overall stadium capacity being increased by several thousand people.

Our responsibilities included:

  • As part of Trigon’s ongoing appointment, we are working closely with the client and stadium management team to review the existing fire safety information in order to develop an updated detailed fire safety strategy through application of principles set out in the Green Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds and other applicable fire safety guidance in order to demonstrate compliance with the Building Regulations.

  • In addition, the fire safety strategy forms a basis for the stadium management to meet their duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order.

  • Trigon have used the Green Guide to determine the appropriate exit capacity and occupancy throughout the stadium, which has been used to inform the development of the fire safety strategy, and also outlines opportunities for future developments.

Results

The fire safety strategy principles respect the existing fire safety and architectural features of the stadium but also meet the client’s aspiration for modernisation through delivering a detailed fire safety strategy that allows for a safe and iconic sporting experience.

Darren Crossmann (WRU) has said that: “It is important to us that we ensure that every aspect of spectator safety is considered and working with Trigon Fire we aim to ensure that all fire related safety matters are fit for purpose for years to come.”
