Research

Research plays an important part in our engineering consultancy work as it helps us to study and understand fundamentals, generate new and innovative ideas, develop unique design solutions and improve existing solutions and technologies.

Research. Innovate. Improve.

Trigon provides Fire Safety Engineering solutions for all building types and sectors.
Our Core Values focus on: People, Solutions and Service.
Research helps develop the People we work and collaborate with, the unique Solutions we create, and the Services we deliver to our clients and project teams.

Our research activities ensure we continuously improve in all areas of the work we deliver.
Research underpins our understanding of fundamentals, generates new ideas, develops innovative solutions, and improves existing technologies.

Fire Safety Engineering is a young, fast-moving discipline.
The construction sector increasingly focus on the ever-evolving needs of sustainability, resistance to natural disasters, and the use of new materials and techniques.
Through our in-house research, and our collaborations with experts and academic institutions globally, we lead the continuous development of Fire Safety Engineering and support other disciplines in the built environment.

  • Trigon is proud to maintain strong connections with several universities. Dr Matthew Bonner, our research lead, is a visiting researcher at Imperial College London and Director, Karl Wallasch, is a lecturer at the Bauhaus University Weimar. Our team regularly presents at universities and research institutions. Trigon also created a scholarship for women to study an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. In addition, we support and sponsor engineering students via the Aldridge Foundation. Trigon offer engineering students a range of exciting opportunities for collaboration, research initiatives, placements and working experiences. The link to students, researchers and other experts helps to build links between academia and industry.

  • Trigon collaborates on research with several organisations, including Imperial College London and the Instytut Techniki Budowlanej (ITB) in Poland. Dr Matthew Bonner, our research lead, produces research on façade fires and computer vision for Imperial College London. The team is also looking into the use and application of new materials, single stair office design, ventilation systems for stairs, smoke control in corridors, and applications for the use of AI to improve Fire Safety Engineering. Trigon regularly presents at national and international conferences, publishes, shares findings and provides peer review for several industry journals.

  • Trigon's research feeds back directly into providing ongoing training and development to our engineers and influences solutions for project specific challenges. We take time to ensure our team is aware of state-of-the-art developments in fire science and engineering, and the opportunities these offer to our projects. We also share this research with the wider community and industry, and have published articles in industry magazines and journals, presented at national and international conferences, and sit on a number of industry committees.

Research Collaboration

We are always looking for opportunities to collaborate with the wider industry.

Summer 2025 Work Experience

Each summer we also offer to host an engineering student or another technical discipline to work with us and get an understanding of both fire safety engineering and research in an industry context. If you are interested in the opportunity for Summer 2025, or have any questions, then please let us know via email to admin@trigonfire.com
