    Job description

    Trigon Fire Safety is an independent Fire Safety Engineering Consultancy specialising in solving unique fire safety challenges for all building types and uses.

    We are looking for a Surveyor / Site Fire Safety Engineer who will provide support to our lead fire safety engineers (Directors, Associates and Senior Engineers) in the review and survey of fire safety provisions within the built environment.

    This is a newly created role due to growth, making it an exciting time to join and develop with us.

    The role

    As a Surveyor / Site Fire Safety Engineer you will be part of a team providing the highest quality advice whilst ensuring life safety is always our priority. Typical day-to-day tasks will include, but are not limited to:

    • Support Chartered Engineers in the on-site delivery of fire safety strategies for a variety of different buildings and sectors.

    • Review architectural drawings and sketches.

    • Undertake on-site surveys of fire safety precautions, either of buildings during construction or retrospectively of existing premises.

    • Support Expert Witness matters through undertaking site inspections, considering defect identification and potential causation.

    • Write technical notes and prepare reports of the site surveys.

    • Attend site visits and inspections with support from senior fire engineers.

    • Assist with the preparation and development of fee proposals.

    • Communicate with clients and design team members in the form of phone calls, emails and meetings.

    • Manage your own time and workload planning.

    • Understand and follow Quality, Health and Safety and Environmental policies and procedures.

    • Consult statutory guidance documents, supporting British Standards and Codes of Practice.

    • Consult fire protection system manufacturers installation information and supporting fire test evidence.

    • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism at all levels.

    • Key contact for multiple clients.

    Qualifications and experience

    As a minimum you will be expected to have:

    • A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Building Surveying or equivalent qualifications.

    • At least 5 years demonstrable experience undertaking surveys of fire safety provisions.

    • Relevant qualifications in passive fire protection inspection such as NEBOSH Fire Certificate or equivalent.

    Training and development

    Once you have successfully passed your probation period a formal training plan will be put in place to give you the opportunity to thrive in your role and make the most of your abilities. Depending on performance and where you would like to take your career, you could be promoted to Senior Surveyor / Site Fire Safety Engineer.

    You should be aware of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) professional engineering requirements and be registered as a member of a professional institution such as the IFE, RICS or CABE.

    In line with Engineering Council UK guidance, you are expected to carry out a minimum of 25 hours of continual professional development per year, however, you are encouraged to exceed this and seek out personal development opportunities.

    Your development is an important part of our business culture, you will have the chance to progress, learn, and be mentored by a Chartered Engineer and work closely with the three founding directors.

    The Role

    As a senior fire engineer, you will be part of a team inspired to make a difference.

    You will be responsible for leading and managing successful project delivery including developing fire safety strategies, reports, technical notes, letters, sketches and all the necessary supporting calculations, using the latest computer modelling software.

    You will have the opportunity to undertake and apply calculations for smoke and temperature spread, as well as more complex smoke and evacuation modelling (hand calculations, zone modelling, CFD simulations), detailed fire dynamics and structural assessments.

    You will review building designs and design elements to assess compliance whilst also designing fire solutions as part of the overall design team, alongside the client, architect and Statutory Authorities.

    You will have a client facing role, including attending meetings with clients, design teams and Statutory Authorities.

    You will use your knowledge of fire engineering, regulations and guidance and project specific objectives to support projects in a variety of sectors.

    You will lead and train junior members of the fire team and support the management in strategic development of the business.

    Job Description: Apprenticeship, Fire Safety Engineer

    We are looking for an individual that aspires to become an Apprentice - Fire Engineer with a passion for buildings, problem solving and a commitment to quality. This is a newly created role due to growth, making it an exciting time to join and develop with us.

    You will be working with our team based in Richmond and study at Birmingham City University (or equivalent).

    What will the apprentice gain at the end?

    Higher and degree apprenticeships are an exciting new way to gain a recognised qualification while working full-time and gaining experience in the workplace. These courses are a high-quality alternative to a traditional university degree, combining a university education with workplace experience. Whilst you study for a BEng (Hons) or equivalent Fire Safety Engineering Degree, we will provide a broad range of hands-on opportunities to put your learning into practice – allowing you to gain real-world training and experience. Your development is an important part of our business culture, you will have the chance to learn, be mentored by a Chartered and /or Senior Engineer, and work closely with the three founding directors.

    What’s the expected career progression?

    Once you have completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained a BEng (Hons) degree from Birmingham City University. You will have gained the skills and knowledge needed to continue your fire safety engineering career. There may also be an opportunity to become a Graduate Fire Safety Engineer with Trigon.

    Duration: 4 years course duration at Birmingham City University.

    The Role

    As an Apprentice Fire Engineer, you will be part of a team inspired to make a difference.

    From the start, you will work on interesting and complex projects to gain practical experience and applying engineering science to real world problems. Assisting with developing fire safety strategies, reports, technical notes, letters, sketches and all the necessary supporting calculations, using the latest computer modelling software. You will be given time for your own studies and development, as well as taking part in research activities to support our R&D team.

    You will have the opportunity to assist with:

    • Calculations for smoke and temperature spread, as well as more complex smoke and evacuation modelling (hand calculations, zone modelling, CFD simulations), detailed fire dynamics and structural assessments.

    • The review of building designs and design elements to assess compliance whilst also designing fire solutions as part of the overall design team, alongside the client, architect and Statutory Authorities.

    • Undertake research activities and support Trigons R&D team.

    • You will also use your knowledge of fire engineering and Building Regulations to support projects in a variety of sectors.

    Experience and qualifications

    Essential

    • Three A-Level standard or equivalent, to include two STEM based subjects such as Maths, Physics, ICT, Computing, Electronics.

    • Five GCSEs at Grade 4 and above including Mathematics, English and Double Science or equivalent qualification.

    You will be expected to

    • Complete your BEng (Hons) Fire Safety Engineering degree or relevant engineering discipline at Birmingham City University (or equivalent) whilst working with us.

    • Participate in engineering training (internal and external) to meet with CPD requirements.

    • Have the ability to work as part of a team on multiple projects, with the ongoing supervision and close support of a mentor.

    • Assist in preparing marked-up drawings, sketches and diagrams.

    • Support the team in the development of fire safety strategies for buildings.

    • Undertake hand calculations and use of computer programmes (e.g. CFD modelling software).

    • Attend design team meetings and site visits.

    • Attend our internal and external training programme and team socials.

    • Interest in fire safety and the built environment.

    • Aptitude for problem solving.

    • Excellent attention to detail and communication skills.
