Stanton Williams Waynflete Riverside View - (c) Secchi Smith

Client

Magdalen College, Oxford

Scope

Trigon was appointed to work with Stanton Williams and a varied design team to develop a fire safety strategy for a series of new student accommodation buildings located on the existing Waynflete site in Oxford, near Magdalen College. Trigon were involved throughout the project from RIBA Stage 1 to RIBA Stage 4.

Our responsibilities included:

  • Undertaking a feasibility study of the proposed design.

  • Liaising with the design team to prepare an outline fire safety strategy and iterate on the proposed building design, ensuring it could meet Building Regulations while achieving the architectural intent for the buildings.

  • Liaising with the client, design team, Approval Authorities and other stakeholders to ensure that the detailed design for each building achieved an acceptable level of fire safety, in line with both legislation and the client’s objectives.

Results

Trigon produced a detailed fire safety strategy that was agreed by the client, design team, and agreed in principle by the Registered Building Control Approver. The strategy allowed the building to achieve the client’s design and sustainability objectives (including achieving BREEAM sustainability goals, incorporating cross-laminated timber structure, and re-using parts of the existing buildings), whilst also meeting all the required fire safety objectives.
